Message from the President

Two years ago, at the Lumen Awards, my predecessor, Tim Milton, handed me the president’s gavel and I became the 91st president of the New York Section. It’s been a wonderful two years of service, thanks to the Board of Managers, and to you, our members and friends.

As president, my role was to work with the board to achieve our current goals and plan future ones. I am most proud of what we have accomplished in the area of education. In addition to our educational programming, we continue to cultivate new talent with our Student Lighting Competition, the Thesis Prize, and the IESNYC Scholarship, which is now in its second year.

Speaking of the Thesis Prize, I want to congratulate this year’s winners, Valerie Chengyi Qin, who received her Master of Fine Arts in Lighting Design from Parsons School of Design at The New School, and Valeria Terentyeva, who received a Master of Science in Lighting from the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic. I also want to say thanks to Glenn Shrum, IALD, MIES, assistant professor and director of the MFA Lighting Design program at Parsons School of Design at The New School, who is our Member of the Month. Glenn has been a promoter and supporter of our programs benefitting students, and has helped to create a special bond between Parsons and the Section.

And finally, at this year’s Lumen Awards, I will hand the president’s gavel to Caleb McKenzie, who has been the Section’s vice president. I have great faith in Caleb and his executive team to carry forward with the work we have been doing. I will remain a member of the Board of Managers, and very much look forward to it.

Brian Belluomini, President
New York City Section of The Illuminating Engineering Society
