President's Message

We Welcome Our New President

Welcome to summer! Young or old, summer sparks a magical feeling of endless adventure. Everything outdoors beckons us to take time, slow down – to enjoy the expansiveness that the warmth and long days afford us. This makes July an odd time in NYC. We’re still hard at work, with deadlines and demanding clients, but our environment is telling us that it’s time to take off and recharge. The city is complicit in this fantasy. Concerts and Shakespeare in the Park, street fairs, celebrations, and jitneys to the beach all urge us to abandon our desks and be together outside. Let’s take in the sun!

Assuming leadership of an organization at this time of year is an interesting challenge. I’m eager to shoulder this new role, and I see the year ahead full of programs and activities and excitement for all we will accomplish together. But at the same time, an entire city is begging us to slow down, to cherish this magical time and its magical light. Our Next Generation Cohort will explore this magic in mid-July when we welcome Manhattanhenge. We are starting off with an event that focuses on both our Emerging Professionals and understanding how celestial light impacts us and the built environment. This is a perfect metaphor for what I hope to accomplish as President of the IESNYC.

Creating Connections
I’d like to build on the work that Megan Carroll undertook to expand our scope. We are creating connections with new members, colleagues in allied fields, and the city at large. Watch this space for “In Conversation With…,” a new feature that will explore how the IESNYC relates to outside organizations. To start, I’ll be reaching out to leaders of nonprofits with shared interests and points of focus. I am hoping to have discussions with AIA members, the retail design community, the IALD, Local 3, and other allies.

The IESNYC turned 117 this year (Wow!), and we are all tasked with continuing the work done by those who came before us. We will continue to strengthen our community, to bridge gaps, and to continue to provide the very best lighting-centered programming to be found. We have big plans for the year ahead, including our first ever golf-outing and a brand-new program, NYControlled.

As we look forward to new challenges and new adventures, I want to congratulate the section for another successful year, culminating in a fabulous Lumen Gala. The recognized projects showed true innovation in the craft of lighting design, and the party itself was amazing. Our Lumen Committee members absolutely outdid themselves. I thank them for their hard work, excellent taste, and sense of play.

Finally, I urge one and all to hold on to that sense of wonder and restoration that comes from long summer days and nights full of stars and fireflies. They remind us that Nature is a far better lighting designer than we can hope to be.

NextGen Slice of Light
SAVE THE DATE: July 12

On July 12th, all NextGen members are invited to join in the celebration of the phenomenon known as Manhattanhenge. Wear your favorite "Light" outfit and come enjoy some "Slice of Light" food and beverages. Relax and mingle with lighting industry professionals, create an artistic memento to cherish and participate in the spectacular display put on by Mother Nature and the built environment of our unique city.
