IESNYC Board Manager

Q: How did you first get started in the lighting industry?
I went to school for electrical engineering technology at Northeastern University, and I don’t recall lighting ever being discussed in class. It wasn’t until early in my career when I was working as an electrical engineer at an MEP firm that the question — “will there be enough light?” — came up on a project, and kept coming up repeatedly. I remember I had just gotten comfortable with navigating the NEC Handbook when this whole other (IES) Lighting Handbook came along. Needless to say, the IES one was much more interesting. So when the managing principal of the MEP firm who reviewed my work saw that I was confident addressing lighting issues and answering lighting photometric questions, I became the firm’s "lighting guy,” but I really didn’t know as much as I needed to.

Q: How did you first get involved in the IESNYC?
My involvement with the Section began when I attended some educational seminars, and it just grew from there. During the economic downturn in 2009, it was my knowledge of lighting that kept me employed, and I was able to transition to a new firm in an energy consulting position. I was to be this new firm’s "lighting guy." In 2011, I finally decided to jump all the way in and get my LC. After accepting an offer from RAB in 2013, I was 100% involved in the lighting industry and had no excuse not to attend all events offered by the Section. In addition to recently becoming a member of the BOM, I currently serve on the Education and Membership committees.

Q: In your opinion, what are the best assets of the IESNYC?
Its members. Lighting is so unique and there’s little to compare it to; I find the same is true for the people who work in the industry.

Q: How do you see your role as a member of the Board of Mangers?
I’ve always been an EE in an LD world. I’d like to think that I can offer an outsider’s prospective that could help incorporate further growth and integration from outside the lighting design community. So when I was asked if I was interested in becoming a manager, I felt honored. I’ve already attended my first BOM meeting, and I guess this means I’m no longer an outsider. However, I do plan on continuing to think like one and offer a fresh pair of eyes when needed.

Q: In your opinion, what are the best assets of the IESNYC?
Our leaders and participating members. They take time out of their demanding schedules to organize events that educate, unite and build a stronger community of designers. It's through their passion and commitment that we have such a thriving section.

Q: How do you see your role as a member of the Board of Mangers?
My role as a member of the Board of Managers is to support the mission of IES and the president's goals for the section. I believe it is important that our section continuously provides value to our members by offering a broad programs base that includes information on emerging technologies and design considerations relevant today, as well as networking opportunities that foster meaningful connections amongst designers and allied professionals.
