
IES Webinar – The Update of LM-79: Optical and Electrical Measurements of Solid State Lighting Products

In 2008 the IES published LM-79, “Approved Method: Electrical and Photometric Measurements of Solid-State Lighting Products.” This measurement standard for solid-state lighting products quickly became the world recognized standard for measuring LED lighting products. Last year the IES Test Procedures Committee (TPC) completed a comprehensive review and revision of LM-79. Last fall, the revision was published as ANSI/IES LM-79, “Approved Method: Optical and Electrical Measurements of Solid-State Lighting Products.” The revision includes better guidance on how to make measurement and requirements that help to reduce measurement variations between different testing facilities. Consideration for these changes was based on information collected from NVLAP proficiency testing, independent research, and an effort to help minimize the burden on testing laboratories.

Cameron Miller, National Institute of Standards and Technology
Cameron Miller joined the National Institute of Standards and Technology in 1996 and in 2013 was appointed the group leader for the Optical Radiation Group. Currently, Cameron is acting as the Deputy Division Chief for the Sensor Science Division of NIST. His research areas include all aspects of Photometry & Radiometry, Measurement Uncertainty, and Vision Science applied to lighting. Cameron is active in standards organization and professional societies, such as IES – Testing Procedure Committee (Chairman for 6 years), IES – Science Advisory Panel Member, CIE, ASTM, and ISCC. He is also an NVLAP assessor for the Energy Efficient Lighting Program and the Calibration Program. Cameron Miller obtained his PhD in Physical Chemistry from Cornell University (1994).
