IESNYC Night of Illumination - January 10, 2005

January 10, 2005 the IES-NYC kick-off Centennial Celebration “A Night of Illumination” was quite brilliant, very well attended, and educational and above all a great time was had by all.

This event was held in midtown NYC at the ddc showroom located in a 1925 Art Deco landmark building, originally designed by Warren & Westmore, Architect of Grand Central Station.  In 2000 ddc hired Philip Johnson/Alan Ritchie Architects to re-design the interior for their upscale, high-end furniture showroom/office space. As the norm for maintaining interest in decorative showrooms, Gabellini Associates was commissioned to update the space in 2004.

Mr. Gabellini in collaboration with MUIRreality developed the interior through the use of color, theatrical scrims, textures and platforms for the furniture groupings. Mr. Gabellini’s design emphasizes and enhances the bold architecture while creating a striking new design.

The evening began with opening remarks by Patricia DiMaggio, IES NY Section President, who then introduced a special guest, Craig Bernecker, IESNA President. Craig spoke briefly on the Vision and Goals for the IESNA. Bonny Ann Whitehouse, IES NY Centennial Chair and Manny Ferris IES Regional Centennial Chair walked us through some future plans and events scheduled for the Centennial Celebration.

Once the “business” portion of the evening ended, it was down to the heart of the program. Peggy Meehan, IES NY Program Co-Chair and moderator, introduced the space, Mr. Gabellini and Mr. Muir. After a short slide presentation a discussion on the interplay of architectural and lighting commenced. Closing remarks; thanks to the sponsors, speakers, and a gentle reminder to pick up a gift bag when leaving were made by Clara Powell, IES NY Past President and Program Co-Chair.
