IES and Cooper Union
Daylighting and Codes Online Course

Developed and presented by Matthew Tanteri

The IES has partnered with The Cooper Union College of Science and Art (in NYC) to create an online course entitled, “Daylighting and Codes”, developed and presented by Matthew Tanteri, FIES, Educator IALD, CPHC. This is a completely online course, and is open to anyone interested (not just those who live or work in New York State). General knowledge of daylighting is recommended, and the course will cover recent changes to the New York State Energy Code, as well as provisions of national model energy codes.

Course Summary

Building and energy codes are at the forefront of our nation’s strive toward a “net zero” constructed environment by 2030. To achieve this rapid transformation, daylighting and the control of electrical lighting have been cast a critical role. This lecture series reveals how daylighting related provisions of model energy codes are being refined to capture the total impact of daylight on whole building energy reduction. It explains how daylighting related provisions are targeting increasingly stringent energy efficiency goals and are moving out from the realm of high performance and reach codes into our nation’s baseline model energy codes.

The course is delivered in three parts:

Part 1: CODES AND THE PATH TO NET ZERO
February 25, 2015 1-2pm ET
60 minute live webinar
This introductory lecture establishes the background for the course series. It identifies the drivers shaping the current set of building energy codes, the bodies responsible for their development, and the processes in place for their revision, adoption and enforcement.

Part 2: DAYLIGHTING PROVISIONS OF NATIONAL MODEL ENERGY CODES
Second session at your convenience
90 minute self-guided webinar on Digital Chalk learning platform
The second lecture provides a comprehensive overview of the numerous daylighting provisions within two primary model energy codes. It begins with explaining the fundamental definitions of daylight zone and daylight area upon which most of the daylighting-related provisions are based, and advances on to chart their compliance paths in various sections, most notably Envelope and Lighting. It explains in comparative fashion the intricacies of the two model energy codes and summarizes the major aspects of their provisions.

Part 3: DAYLIGHTING PROVISIONS OF STATE & CITY CODES (New York, NY edition)
March 11, 2015 1-2pm ET
60 minute live webinar
The final lecture brings an understanding of daylighting regulations to state and city level, in this case, New York State and New York City. It begins with the long established requirements for natural light that reside in the current state building and residential codes, and energy driven fenestration area limits in the current state energy code. In order to impart critical perspective on the daylighting related provisions scattered among NYC’s intricate web of codes, laws and zoning regulations; it presents a brief history of daylighting in New York City from the early 19th century to present. Finally, it delves into the current planning initiatives of the mayoral administration, from recently enacted amendments that foster daylighting to a newly set net zero target.

Presentation Objectives

  • Introduce the drivers shaping the current set of building energy codes, the bodies responsible for their development, and the processes in place for their revision, adoption and enforcement.

  • Provide a comprehensive overview of daylighting provisions within the current revisions of the model building energy codes, namely 2013 ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings (Std. 90.1) and 2012 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).

  • Explain the intricate set of daylighting regulations that exist on state and city level (New York State and New York City) and in recent planning initiatives.
