This immersive tour invites attendees to see the inner workings of a public art studio and where Jen pushes the boundaries of art, technology, and community connections.

Jen Lewin, Artist
Jen Lewin is an American contemporary artist known internationally for her interactive light installations. Residing at the intersection of art and technology, Lewin has spent her 28-year career perfecting the coding, engineering, and functionality of her work through elegantly written software, programming, and custom hardware. Combining the beauty of the natural world with the transformative possibilities of human interactivity, Lewin’s large-scale public works and traveling light landscapes have shown that art has the transformative capability to bring communities together and make the world feel a little more connected.

Jen Lewin Studio received a 2023 Lumen Citation for Environmental Awareness Through Light for The Last Ocean installation that transformed public spaces from Sydney to Detroit. She is currently based in Brooklyn, where her works are designed and fabricated.

MODERATORS

Michiru Tanaka, IES, IALD
Principal, Michiru Tanaka Lighting Design
Michiru Tanaka is a lighting designer and consultant with 20 years of global lighting design experience. She established Michiru Tanaka Inc. in 2009 and swiftly forged collaborations with renowned companies such as Toshiba, Disney, Kaneka Corporation, Isometrix, and L’Observatoire International.

Her designs consistently embody the unique sensibility of Japanese lighting known as “In’ei Raisan” (In Praise of Shadows). Her strength lies in fostering mindful communication between teams and clients.

Michiru served as an Adjunct Professor at the Interior Design Department of the Fashion Institute of Technology and Pratt Institute in New York from 2015 to 2022, before expanding her presence to Southern California.

Hamilton Guillén, IALD
Lighting Designer, The Lighting Practice
Hamilton Guillén is a lighting designer and project manager specializing in experiential design.

His architectural interests encompass public works, urban art projects, hospitality, and picturesque landscapes. His creative process relies on the collaborations of diverse teams where curiosity, thoughtful analysis, research, and fieldwork integrate to produce bespoke, immersive environments. 

Prior to joining TLP, Hamilton has worked with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Leni Schwendinger Light Projects (LSLP), and Tirschwell & Co. He serves on the Coordinating Committee of the IALD’s NY Chapter.
