Q: How did you first get started in the lighting industry?
I got my start at Pennsylvania State University where I studied architectural engineering. I realized I wanted no part of the structural or mechanical engineering industry, so I decided to give lighting a try. For two consecutive summers, I had the opportunity to intern at two highly reputable firms - Schuler Shook in Chicago and at SBLD Studio in New York City. At both firms I met passionate professionals who loved design and who loved their work. Learning first-hand from them convinced me that this career path would be a great fit for me. In 2008, I started my industry journey as a junior designer of SBLD Studio and just recently, I was named a principal at the firm.

Q: How did you first get involved in the IESNYC?
Honestly, during my first few years on the job I really thought I was “too cool” join to any professional organizations. At first, I was focused solely on proving myself to be a designer. With all of possibilities in NYC the last thing I wanted to do was sit at a lecture on a Wednesday night! However, a few of my co-workers were diligent and finally persuaded me to go to IESNYC events and to participate in the Emerging Professionals group. I was completely surprised at the fun I had meeting other designers with similar experiences. I never anticipated that I would form friendships and deep bonds through an organization. What I had earlier assumed to be boring events and lectures were actually quite insightful. After attending my first Lumen Awards event and seeing Gary Dulanski in a sparkling tux, I thought “this is a bunch of folks I probably should join.”

Q: How do you see your role as a member of the IESNYC?
The turmoil of the last couple of years has reminded us that every individual person matters and has something of value to contribute. I think we can all benefit from learning about one another’s unique experiences and backgrounds. There is value in sharing those experiences that can help others. As a member of IESNYC, I have a nuanced perspective that offers valuable insight both as a Black man and as an experienced lighting designer. I have deep appreciation for the older members who mentor and provide context for me. Their support is a tremendous part in my professional development. Now, I want to do that for others, so I try to live as proof for younger designers and to make sure this organization is inclusive and accountable through my participation.

Q: In your opinion, what are the best assets of the IESNYC?
Although the IESNYC has hundreds of members, it still feels like a close and tight knit community. The events hosted by IESNYC are creative ways to engage a community of engineers, architects, designers, and manufacturers to foster environments for both learning and fellowship. We have a chance to celebrate and appreciate all of the hard work and imaginative design of our region. These opportunities lift the entire industry up. The knowledge that gets shared through this network and those personal interactions elevates the entire community, and everyone can play a part. This is what makes our NYC Section the best in the Society and in the world. We are devoted to learning and developing content that keeps us on the cutting edge.
