Q: How did you first get started in the lighting industry?
I first became interested in lighting while studying architecture in Mexico in 2010. From the beginning, lighting was always an essential part of my projects. I think this is particularly because I grew up in northern Mexico, where daylight lasts longer and is brighter and more intense. This naturally led me to explore architectural elements like screens, overhangs, and shading devices to filter and shape natural light. Although at that stage, my approach was very conceptual. Looking back I can see the curiosity was already there.

During my master’s studies at Hochschule Wismar in Germany I was able to explore lighting in a much deeper and more technical way. There, I connected with designers who shared the same passion. My professors there have had a lasting impact on my career, including Jan Blieske and Michael Rhode. That experience launched my career in the lighting industry.

Q: How did you first get involved in the IESNYC?
While living in Berlin, I noticed that although Germany has a large and well established lighting community, it operates quite differently from the US, especially New York. With few sales representatives and fewer lighting organizations operating in English, opportunities for connection were more limited, particularly for international professionals. As a result, there are limited opportunities to actively welcome and foster relationships within the industry.

When I moved to New York 3 years ago, one of the first things I did was join professional organizations to expand my network. My first experience with the IESNYC was attending an event at the Bowery District hosted by the Next Gen group. It was eye-opening!

I visited several lighting showrooms for the first time and met colleagues who have since become close friends. From that point on, I’ve worked to support the lighting community, volunteering with different organizations. The IESNYC gave me that first sense of belonging in the city’s lighting community.

Q: How do you see your role as a member of the IESNYC?
Last year, I was selected to participate in the Guiding Lights Circle mentorship program, where first-hand guidance from Derek Porter played a key role in helping me redirect my professional path and gain a broader perspective on the lighting industry. Going forward, I see my role as both an example and a source of inspiration for my fellow Next Gen emerging professionals. Narrowing the chasm between experienced professionals and those just starting out on their careers is very important to me.

In fact, I want all kinds of individuals to feel welcomed, supported, and part of our community. I’ve served this past year on the Moonlighting Committee (technically, as part of my role as IALD chapter coordinator). By sharing my lived (and worked) experience, I aim to make these programs even more meaningful for the next generation of designers.

Q: In your opinion, what are the best assets of the IESNYC?
Within a city as diverse and fast-paced as New York, the IESNYC remains highly influential and (IMO) relevant. But it still fosters a strong culture of openness across all levels of experience. I truly value how the Section encourages meaningful dialogue, mentorship, and the sharing of real-world experiences. So it’s easy for newcomers to feel connected, supported, and inspired. It’s a place where learning, professional practice, and curiosity naturally come together.
