Q: How did you first get started in the lighting industry?
I embarked on my journey into the lighting industry after graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture from City Tech (CUNY’s The New York City College of Technology). Initially uncertain about my career path, I explored various job opportunities, ranging from architectural drafting to public service exams. However, my path took a decisive turn when I landed my first interview and a subsequent internship at Schwinghammer Lighting. This experience opened my eyes to the art of architectural lighting design. I remember a particular redlining session with Bill Schwinghammer that ignited my passion for the field.
I honed my skills and built substantial client relationships at renowned firms like BOLD and SBLD Studio. I contributed to major projects like Newark Liberty International Airport, Estée Lauder headquarters, BNP Paribas headquarters, and Tangram (retail). These complex projects, under great lead designers, enhanced my design and project management skills and fueled my entrepreneurial spirit. I’d long aspired to run my own life and business, and was motivated by my mother's encouragement.
Driven by a dream to blend top-quality design with budget-conscious, sustainable solutions, I founded my own lighting design firm in 2022. Seeing my own brand on drawings and projects brings a sense of fulfillment that is truly priceless.
Q: How did you first get involved in the IESNYC?
As a second-generation immigrant in New York City, I'm fueled by the dream of building a successful business and so grateful for the immense support from both colleagues and competitors. The IESNYC has been a tremendous resource, providing networking opportunities, educational programs, and a platform to share ideas and innovations in lighting.
Q: How do you see your role as “Member of the Month” of the IESNYC?
As a member of the IESNYC, I see my role as both learner and contributor. While I strive to stay abreast of the latest developments and practices in our industry, I also aim to give back by sharing my own experiences and insights through discussions and presentations. Post-COVID, we’re growing together and fostering a vibrant, diverse community.
As I build the business side of my design business I hope to both learn and contribute to discussions on project financing and in-house accounting and marketing. I believe my support of the Asian Lighting Community can also raise the bar of lighting design practice.
Q: In your opinion, what are the best assets of the IESNYC?
The best assets of the IESNYC are its people and the collective knowledge they bring to the table. The vast expertise within the group allows for a broad spectrum of perspectives, and enriching discussions that lead to innovative solutions. Additionally, the IES's commitment to education and professional development ensures that the industry as a whole has opportunities to advance skillsets and broaden our understanding of lighting design.
