2005 Student Competition Winners

Winners of The 2005 New York City Student Lighting Competition

For our Fifth year, all New York City Design Students were invited by the New York Section of the IESNA to participate in a citywide design competition on the study of light and shadow.  Twenty-seven student entries were submitted representing Parson School of Design, FIT, and Pratt.  Four winners were selected.

With the generous support of Professional Lighting Design Magazine, ELDA, Osram/Sylvania, Louis Poulsen Lighting, Lutron Electronics and Enterprise Lighting Sales, and contributions from Con Edison and Nuluz, the IESNY Student Grant Competition allowed students to explore light as an art form, demonstrate light as a stimulus, and prove light is a valuable medium.

The objective of this year's design challenge was to develop a three-dimensional study of light, inspired by the relationship between shadows over time.  The entry guidelines were the submission could be made of any material, must include an electric light source, and must be transportable in a cab.

Sculpt Shadows over time Evolving Shadows
"Silence to light, light to silence.
The threshold of their crossing
Is singularity
Is inspiration
Is the sanctuary of art
Is the treasury of the shadows
Materials cast shadows
Shadows belong to light."
